The old adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” is only half true. You absolutely can teach an older dog new behaviors, but there is a key period in a dog’s life where it is MUCH easier! From 8 to 16 weeks your dog absorbs information much faster. If you missed this period we can still help you.
During this same time frame a puppy’s curiosity outweighs their fear. This is the time for socialization; hearing, smelling, feeling and seeing the world around them at this critical time is essential for a confident and well adjusted dog. Dogs that miss extensive socialization often become anxious around new people, dogs and environments later in life.
I share this information because the majority of dog owners I’ve shared it with were not aware, and as I said it is a critical period in a dog’s life. Missing it results in far more work for owners, so get started as soon as you get your dog!
